Above the Fold (ATF) is an older advertising term. It originated with newspapers, and was used to describe any space above the fold of the newspaper.
On the web, above the fold refers to the part of a website that loads on the screen without scrolling. While this can vary depending on someone's resolution on their monitor - it's typically anything in the top 600px of the page.
Should publishers run ads above the fold?
It's up to you! There are some people who will tell you no. That it can hurt your site's performance and lower your Core Web Vitals score. Google themselves has said that CWV does not hurt your site's ranking. It's a small part of their algorithms, but important because faster site loads mean a better user experience, leading more people to return.
So why have ads above the fold? Advertisers love above the fold placements. They will pay more for ATF placements since it's one of the first things you see on a page. So we do offer some above the fold specific ads, in order to help capitalize on their requests. They do come with higher pay.
So in the end, it's up to you.
