AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) is an alternate mobile page framework that is designed to create fast-loading, mobile-optimized web pages. Because of the way AMP pages are structured, and because AMP only allows a more limited ad stack, it cannot use standard ad tags or injected ads and requires specific AMP ad tags that must be manually installed for AMP pages.
If you're using AMP pages and want to monetize those pages, you can use this guide to include ads on your AMP pages.
Getting Started:
Step 1: If you haven’t already, install the AMP for WP or AMP plugin. (We prefer the AMP for WP plugin, but either will work.) Take any steps needed to configure the plugin.
Step 2: Install the Ad Inserter plugin if it’s not already installed.
Using Ad Inserter to place AMP ads:
The important part of setting up any AMP ad tag in Ad Inserter is that you MUST start the code block with this:
[ADINSERTER AMP]
That shortcode tells Ad Inserter to only insert the ad tag on AMP pages, and not any other pages. Without that shortcode, the ad will not appear.
In the examples below, the code comes from a specific site. Make sure you’re grabbing the correct ad tags for YOUR specific site in the Ad Sizes - AMP section in the SHE Media portal. This is what that section looks like:
Remember that unlike our standard ad tags, AMP ad tags can be reused more than once on the same page.
Example of Mobile banner (320x50) AMP ad
In this example, the Mobile banner is set to appear Before Content on post pages only. You can try different/multiple locations using the Ad Injector settings, but this is typically a reliable spot. Remember to set the insertion alignment to Center, too.
Example of a Mobile In-Content (320x50, 300x250) AMP ad
The in-content ads are set for Posts only. In the rules below the code box, you can see this example is set to be inserted after the 4th paragraph, and the alignment is centered.
For multiple in-content ads, you’ll have to set up a different rule for each one. For example, a site could have three in-content ads, set up to be inserted after the 4th, 9th, and 15th paragraphs. The number that you set up will depend on the average post length for the site. You’ll have to create a separate ad insertion entry for each.
Example of the Mobile Footer Adhesion AMP ad
This ad requires two separate pieces of code to complete. You MUST have both pieces in place for the ad to appear.
First, you’ll set up the insertion of the ad tag in an open insertion rule, like this:
You’ll want to make sure this one shows on every page type, and set the insertion into the Footer with the alignment as Center.
Next, you have to also add the AMP sticky code to the header. To do this, select the gear tab at the top of the Ad Inserter box (after rule #16) and then select Header in the lower row of tabs that appear, below the Reset All Settings button. This is where you’ll paste the code snippet:
The last step is to make sure the little circle button in the top right corner of the Header tab is green and not red. If it’s red, click it to activate header insertion, which will then show the circle as green.
Finally, don’t forget to save all of your changes!
